how to travel for months on end affordably

When people think of traveling the world, most tend to mummer something like... "if only i had the money." but if you're smart about it, you can travel for months on end, even years on only a few thousand dollars.
Let's take Peru for an example(because it is what i know). You could get away with staying there for only $5 per night, $2 per meal, and come away with priceless memories that you'll never forget! As far as overland travel goes, you can travel by bus for some pretty ridiculously cheap prices.

step 1-eliminate or cover your monthly expenses.
this would be the biggest part if you plan on staying out of country for longer than a month or two. this means paying off your home, car, or whatever; or you can rent out your home.

step 2- buy your one-way ticket 6 months early (preferably cash not credit as not to add to your monthly bills. (DEBT FREE IS THE WAY TO BE!!!) do nothing but save money between now and your departure. hold two jobs if you want.
MOST PEOPLE DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW LUCKY WE ALL ARE TO HAVE BEEN BORN IN A DEVELOPED NATION!!! What takes us just a month or so to make $1000+ takes other folks from developing nations a full year. this is why extended travel would be best suited for up-and-coming economies like those in Latin America or Asia and Africa.

step 3- while you're making the extra money to get away, read up on where you're going and where you'll want to end your trip. it would be best if you could fly in with a cheap ticket, and fly out with a cheap ticket since you'll probably spend more on a plane ticket than you'll spend in your host nations in a month!

you can figure out the rest.
